At the Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association (AMHSA), mental health is now recognized as a vital part of workplace safety. Under the leadership of Chief Administration Officer Craig Hrynchuk, AMHSA has taken bold, responsive steps to embed mental health into core safety practices—training thousands, reaching First Responder communities, and building a culture of psychological health and safety across Alberta. This is a story of leadership with humility, action with impact, and a vision that proves real change is possible.

The construction and trades sector faces some of the highest risks for mental health challenges. According to Statistics Canada, 33 per cent of men in the construction industry report poor mental health. Furthermore, 64 per cent of construction workers wished their employers did more to support mental health initiatives.

The Mental Health First Aid for the Veteran Community (MHFA-VC) program, established by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and Veterans Affairs Canada, addresses mental health challenges faced by Canadian veterans and their families. By equipping families and communities with practical tools, MHFA-VC strengthens support networks, ensuring veterans feel understood and supported in their journey to wellness.

In 2023, 7.5% of SHN’s workforce underwent TWM training – a testament to the program’s growing impact. The team at SHN has witnessed a surge in interest, with the session’s waitlist expanding as employees and physicians have encouraged their peers to take the training.
